I made a conscious decision this week to try some new coding tech. In the few days since making that decision I’ve been wrestling with what form this “new tech” will take and I think I’ve come up with something…

I’m going to have a stab at some Angular.js

I’m not sure what form the back end will take but right now I’m leaning towards Parse.com – I’ve had some experience with it in the past, it’s free (at the volumes I’m going to be using) and relatively easy to use.

I’m also going to have to learn a new API – you’ll find out which one in a moment.

I think I’ve also made my mind up about what I’m going to build. Initially I’m going to keep it really simple and build a small component that mirrors the functionality of another app I’ve used frequently with the intention to build that component out with some new functionality I think is missing in the “real” version. That component is the “my ebay” view in the Android ebay application – so I’ll have to learn a little about the ebay API. It’s a pretty simple component made up of three tabs with a list of items in each but there are a number of things I think I can improve upon. For now I’m going to keep those improvements under my hat and reveal them as the project progresses.

So why am I bothering posting about this if I have nothing but a few lofty ideas? Well, it’s a line in the sand. A statement of intention. A self-motivational tool to make sure I spend a little time each evening building out this thing and blogging about it. Not only will I have to learn a handful of new tech, I’ll have to force myself to write. At the moment I’m hoping to have a new mini-article each week to report on progress. We’ll see how it goes 😀
